Child acting has been taken to new heights by many youngsters within the last decade or so. Films like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings have put huge demands on young actors and they have lived up to the task, giving child acting a new level of respect that the next generation will now have to live up to. We can assuredly look forward to many more new and exciting child acting performances in the very near future.
In earlier times, child acting consisted mainly of portraying three basic types, The cutesy type, perfected by Shirley Temple, the whiney type, perfected by a slew of child acting pros and amateurs, and the little brat that you want to strangle and wish someone would slap throughout most of the movie type, also perfected by a slew of lesser and greater child acting talents.
Nowadays, since movies like ET, and Goonies came out, the range of child acting characters has greatly expanded, thanks to the work of many great child acting professionals that worked on movies throughout the eighties and early nineties, not for very much pay, until we saw McCully Culkin reel in his multi-million dollar paychecks, and studios saw that child acting could be relied upon to generate big payoffs at the box office.
